The DOVASTON Surname by Ruth Dovaston Stant

The English surname DOVASTON appears to be of local origin, being derived from the name of the place of residence of the initial bearer. In this instance, the surname derives from the place-name DOVASTON a township of Kinnerley, in the County of Shropshire, England, the first recorded DOVASTON being Daniel DOVASTON, a farmer b.abt.1624 ...

I believe the surname comes from 'Dov[ey]' and 'aston'. There is the River Dovey which runs north-south through the centre of Wales. A Roman settlement 'Dov[ey] - Aston = Dovaston' seems plausable.

There is another River Dove in Derbyshire and Dovaston is a local surname there as well. It is possible the surname originated in Derbyshire and was brought to Shropshire. Or vice-versa. Or may have originated separately.

Ancient meanings of the word 'dov[e]' had many uses in different languages, but it was often connected to 'water', a 'bog' and 'dark/black'.

The River Dovey rises in the small lake Creiglyn Dyfi at about 1900 feet above sea level, below Aran Fawddwy, flowing south to Dinas Mawddwy and Cemmaes Road, then south west past Machynlleth to Cardigan Bay at Aberdyfi. It shares its watershed with the River Severn and the River Dee before flowing generally south-westwards down to a wide estuary. The only large town on its route is Machynlleth.
